Prostate Health — What Nobody Tells Men

Prostate Health — What Nobody Tells Men

Posted by Wise Women Botanicals Staff on Sep 7th 2026

Most men will get it. Almost none of them will talk about it.

This Saturday Connie takes on the organ half the population has, most of them eventually have trouble with, and nobody brings up at dinner: the prostate.

It's about the size of a walnut, it sits just under the bladder, and it has one design flaw that explains nearly everything that follows — the tube that empties your bladder runs straight through the middle of it. When the prostate slowly enlarges, which starts in some men in their forties and catches up with most by their sixties, it squeezes the one pipe you'd rather it left alone. The result gets blamed on a late glass of water, or on getting older, and it quietly rearranges a man's sleep. Often his wife's too.

Here's the part worth hearing clearly: an enlarged prostate and prostate cancer are two different things, and one does not turn into the other. They can produce similar symptoms, which is exactly why guessing is a poor plan. Connie will be plain about where that line sits — what's reasonable to understand at home, and what belongs in a doctor's office.

She'll also get into why the gland enlarges in the first place — the hormone story isn't the one most men assume, and it is not simply "too much testosterone" — what the PSA number actually measures and the several ordinary things that move it, and where the traditional plant knowledge around men's health comes from.

And if the man in your life won't come, come anyway. In this area, most of what finally gets acted on started with somebody else noticing.

This week we're covering

  • What the prostate actually does — and the design flaw that explains almost every symptom
  • BPH vs. prostate cancer: why they're not the same thing, why one doesn't become the other, and where the symptoms overlap
  • The hormone story behind an enlarging prostate — DHT, estrogen, and why "just add testosterone" misreads the problem
  • The PSA test — what the number measures, what raises it besides cancer, and the questions worth asking
  • Night-time bathroom trips, broken sleep, and what that costs the rest of the body
  • Belly fat, blood sugar and the metabolic connection men rarely hear about
  • Everyday things that make symptoms worse — evening fluids, alcohol, caffeine, long hours sitting, and some common cold and allergy medicines
  • Foods and nutrients long associated with prostate health — cooked tomatoes and lycopene, cruciferous vegetables, zinc, selenium and omega-3s
  • Traditional plant knowledge for men's health — saw palmetto, nettle root, pumpkin seed, pygeum and rye pollen
  • The red flags — the symptoms that mean stop reading and call your doctor

New to our workshops? You're very welcome. Connie starts each one from the ground up, so nothing this Saturday assumes you've been before. Bring your questions.
