Essential Oils for Tinnitus: Ringing Ears, and What Helps Me Settle

Posted by Connie Jacoby, Naturopath Health Consultant on Sep 29th 2026

Friends, if you have ever lain in a dark, quiet room and heard a high, thin ringing that nobody else can hear, you know how lonely that sound can be. So let's talk about it, because there is more you can do than you might think, and some of it costs nothing at all.

What the ringing is

Tinnitus is a sound your ear or your brain makes on its own: a ring, a hum, a hiss, a whoosh. It is not a disease by itself; it is a signal, and like every signal in your body it is there to make you pay attention. The most common reasons are loud noise (a lifetime of mowers, concerts, and shop tools adds up), plain old age, a plug of wax, tight muscles in the jaw and neck, and certain prescriptions. Stress and short sleep turn the volume up on all of it.

When to have it looked at

I am here for the plant-based side. Have your doctor look in your ears if the ringing came on suddenly, if it is in one ear only, if it beats in time with your heart, or if it came along with dizziness or a drop in your hearing. Those are the ones that need a doctor's eyes, and often the fix is as simple as clearing wax. And if you are on prescriptions, ask whether any of them are known to ring the ears. That is a walk you take with your doctor, not a change you make on your own.

Habits that quiet it

  • Protect what you have. Foam earplugs for the mower, the saw, and the concert. This is the single biggest thing.
  • Give your brain something else to listen to at night: a fan, a little rain sound, a low radio. Silence makes ringing louder.
  • Unclench. Most of us carry our jaw tight. Let the teeth part, drop the shoulders, and do the five-minute neck routine from my lymph massage post.
  • Try two weeks with less caffeine and less salt and notice what changes. Everyone is different; be your own assessor.
  • Sleep. Tired ears ring louder.

What I reach for

For the tight, tired feeling that gathers around the ears and along the jaw, I use Soothing Ear Essential Oil Blend. It is just two oils: Helichrysum, the everlasting flower that has been treasured in skin and body care for generations, and Lavender, the old favorite for settling. I put a drop in the cup of the ear and along the neck just below the earlobe, two or three times a day, and let it be part of the unclenching.

One rule I will not bend on: never drop oil inside the ear canal. Not this blend, not any oil. The outside of the ear and the neck are where it belongs.

I will not promise you silence, friend; nobody honest can. What I can promise is that a calmer body is a quieter one, and you have more say over that than the ringing would have you believe.
