Essential Oils for Neuropathy: Tingling Feet, Burning Hands, and Where to Start

Posted by Connie Jacoby, Naturopath Health Consultant on Sep 22nd 2026

Friends, pain is in your body for a reason. The reason is to notify you that you need to pay attention. When that pain is a tingle, a burn, a pins-and-needles buzz, or a strange numbness in your feet or your hands, the message is coming from the very ends of your nervous system, and it deserves a careful listen.

Why it lands in the feet and hands

Think of your nervous system as the wiring in a big old house. The main lines run down your spine; the longest branches reach all the way to your toes and fingertips. Those far ends are the first to go quiet or noisy when something upstream is off: blood sugar running high for years, a shortfall of vitamin B12, a lot of alcohol, certain prescriptions, or an old injury pressing on a nerve. That is why neuropathy so often starts in the feet and creeps upward like a sock.

The cause matters more than the comfort

I am here for the plant-based side, and this is one where I lean hard on your doctor. Neuropathy is a symptom of something, and finding the something is the whole job. Your doctor can check your blood sugar, your B12, your thyroid, and your prescriptions, and a good many folks find the answer right there. Go soon if it came on fast, if you are getting weak or stumbling, or if you have diabetes. And if your feet are numb, look at them every single night, top and bottom, for any sore you cannot feel. A numb foot cannot tattle on you.

Start with a pencil

Here is what I ask everyone who sits down with me: write it down. Where the pain is, what kind it is (burn, tingle, stab, numb), what time of day, what makes it better and worse. I am not like you and you are not like your neighbor, and a week of notes tells us more than an hour of guessing. Bring that page to your doctor, too.

Comfort that does not cost much

  • A warm foot soak in the evening, then a slow massage from the toes up toward the heart.
  • Walking. Circulation is nerve food, and your feet need the blood flow.
  • Warm and cool packs, alternated, on the spot that complains.
  • Good shoes with room in the toe box, and never barefoot outdoors if your feet are numb.
  • The five-minute lymph routine from my earlier post, especially the legs.

What I reach for

For the evening massage, I use Nerve & Muscle Comfort Essential Oil Blend: Lemon and Cedarwood, one bright and clean, one warm and steadying. A few drops in a spoonful of carrier oil or plain lotion, worked slowly into the feet, ankles, and hands before bed. It supports healthy circulation as part of that massage and it makes the ritual something you look forward to, which is how a habit sticks.

That is a comfort, not a fix, and the plant side is there to support you along the way while you and your doctor find the cause. Be your own assessor, be diligent, and give those hardworking feet a few kind minutes every night.
