Essential Oils for Lipomas: The Soft Lump Under the Skin, Explained

Posted by Connie Jacoby, Naturopath Health Consultant on Sep 7th 2026

Friends, one of the most common things folks show me across the kitchen table is a soft lump under the skin, usually on an arm, a shoulder, the back, or a thigh, and the first thing they want to know is whether they should be scared of it. So let's talk about lipomas plainly.

What a lipoma is

A lipoma is a little pocket of ordinary fat cells that decided to gather in one spot under the skin. It is soft, rubbery, and it moves a bit when you push it. It grows slowly, over years, and it usually does not hurt. Doctors see them constantly; some folks get one, some get a dozen, and they tend to run in families. Most are the size of a grape or a walnut and never get much bigger.

Every new lump still gets a doctor's hands on it

I am here for the plant-based side, and this is the rule I will not bend: a new lump is your doctor's to name, not mine and not yours. A doctor can usually tell a lipoma by feel in about a minute, and if there is any question they can take a picture of it. Go sooner rather than later if the lump is hard rather than soft, if it grew fast, if it hurts, if it is deep in the muscle, or if the skin over it changes color. Once it has a name, you can stop worrying, and worry is like sitting in a rocking chair: you may rock, but you are never going to get anywhere.

What to do about one you have

Honestly, friends, for most lipomas the answer is to leave it be. If it is in a spot that rubs on a bra strap or a belt, or it bothers you to look at, your doctor can take it out in a short office visit; that is the only thing that makes one go away, and I would never tell you otherwise. Meanwhile, keep the whole area moving: the five-minute lymph massage from my earlier post, a good walk every day, and plenty of water, because a body that moves its fluids along is a more comfortable body all over.

What I reach for

For the skin over a spot like this, when I want to give it some steady, gentle attention, I use Body Smoothing Essential Oil Blend: Clove and Frankincense, two oils that have been valued in traditional practice for generations. A couple of drops diluted in a carrier oil, massaged slowly into the area two or three times a day, as part of the same routine you use for the rest of your skin. It supports healthy circulation and the look and feel of smooth, comfortable skin. It does not shrink lipomas; only your doctor's hands do that. It is simply a kind, consistent way to tend a part of you that you have been poking at and fretting over.

You are fearfully and wonderfully made, lumps and all. Get it named, then let it be, and put your energy where it counts.
