Boosting Immunity Naturally: A Seasonal Wellness Guide

Boosting Immunity Naturally: A Seasonal Wellness Guide

Posted by Connie Jacoby, Naturopathic Healthcare Consultant on Feb 20th 2024

Every year when the seasons turn, folks start asking me the same good question: what can I do to stay well when everything seems to be going around? Friends, I love that question — because most of the answer doesn't cost a dime. Your immune system is on the job around the clock, fearfully and wonderfully made, and what it asks of us is mostly the simple, steady things, done faithfully. Start with sleep. Your body does its deepest housekeeping while you rest, and there's no shortcut around it. Keep a regular bedtime, make the room dark and quiet, and put the screens away a little earlier than feels natural. You'll feel the difference within a week, okay? Next, let your food be your medicine, like Hippocrates said. Crowd your plate with vegetables — the greens first, then all the colors — add pure citrus fruits, and go easy on the sugar and the processed foods. Every good thing your body does, it does with the materials you hand it at the table. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. You're mostly water, friend. Here's my simple check: lay your hand flat and give the skin on the back a gentle pinch. If it tents up and is slow to settle, your body is asking for more water — and if the outside of you is thirsty, you can imagine how the inside feels. Go easier on the fluids that dry you out, and keep the water coming all day. A cup of green tea is a lovely warm way to hydrate, too — it's naturally rich in antioxidants, and there's a reason folks have loved it for centuries. Now here's the one people don't expect from me: tend your stress. Stress is heavy on a body, plain and simple. A walk outside, a few slow breaths, prayer or quiet meditation, time with people who lift you up — these belong on your wellness list right beside the vegetables. So does plain old handwashing, especially in the busy seasons, and so does getting up and moving that wonderful body of yours every day. And yes, the plants have their place at this table. Elderberry, echinacea, garlic, ginger, and rosehips have been treasured in traditional practice for generations — the kinds of things wise women have kept in the cupboard for a long, long time as part of supporting the body's natural defenses. I'm always glad to talk about which traditional favorites might fit into your routine. One thing I want to say plainly: if something has knocked you down hard, hung on too long, or has you worried, please see your doctor — that's exactly what they're there for. And always work with your doctor on anything you're taking; I'm here for the plant-based side. If you'd like help putting together a sensible seasonal routine, give us a call at 660-263-1033 or send us an email — that conversation is what I'm here for. Thank you for your attention, and Peace and Good Health. Connie
